Benny and Joon

Directed by: Jeremiah Chechik. Also starring: Mary Stuart Masterson, Aidan Quinn, Julianne Moore, and Oliver Platt

Depp in Benny & JoonSynopsis: Joon is a little unbalanced. Sometimes, without warning, her sweet nature gives way to odd behaviour — including a penchant for setting fires. She lives with her older brother Benny, who has spent his life taking care of her since their parents died. One night, while playing a poker game with unusual stakes, Joon loses her hand... and wins Sam, a whimsical misfit who soon charms his way into Joon's heart. Widescreen version.

Sample quote: “It's a shame about raisins.” Sam to Joon

Comment: No doubt not a realistic portrayal of mental illness, but a very charming picture with vivid scenes and dialogue that stand up to repeated viewing. The cast is excellent, the use of music is very striking, and Depp's Keaton-esque physical comedy routines are a stand-out. Rating: ****

The Extras: Worth the time, especially the movie trailer blessedly devoid of vapid voiceover and the director's commentary, which reveals how much he cared about this film. Also features two deleted scenes, a lighting and stunt reel, and the video of the "500 Miles" theme song.

Usability: Not a problem. The menus are basic and easy to navigate through.

Next Depp film: Chocolat
